Join us for a transformative 2-day workshop on Sign Painting at New York Sign Museum in Brooklyn!

About the New York Sign Museum Mission

The New York Sign Museum was established in 2019 with the intention to preserve the unique history of signage and businesses in New York City. The New York Sign Museum is a 501(c)(3) public charity. The NYSM is a not-for-profit educational space for all, from sign admirers to designers looking to learn the historic art of sign painting.The NYSM team includes artists, archivists, and signage professionals. Experienced industry professionals provide sign de-installations at no cost to building or business owners, and are able to keep pieces of history from ending up in the dumpster. The foundation also offers repairs and refurbishment, tax incentives for donations, as well as a rebate program for businesses that would like to replace their old signs.The NYSM collection is currently housed in a space adjacent to Noble Signs. Noble Signs Inc., a fully insured local sign company, partners with NYSM in the deinstallation of accessioned signage.


The Workshop
Join us in the museum for an immersive 2-day workshop to master the art of Sign Painting at the New York Sign Museum in Brooklyn. This hands-on experience will be led by Tokyo-based, renowned sign painter Peter Liedberg (www.letter-boy.com, @letter_boy)

Over the course of the workshop, you'll delve into the rich tradition of sign painting, learning essential techniques and gaining practical skills. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your craft, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry. Learning Outcomes
After spending two days with world-renowned sign painter and lettering artist Peter Liedberg, you’ll leave with:

  • Gain a basic understanding of letterform construction and sign painting alphabets
  • Learn brush lettering mechanics including how to properly hold a lettering brush and how to pull a clean stroke
  • Practice hand-drawn layout techniques
  • Get comfortable creating letters with a brush and discover the joy and confidence that comes with this enriching skill

 

Audience and Format

This class will be held in person at the New York Sign Museum, which is housed in the working design studio and workshop of Noble Signs. Open to all levels, especially beginners and anyone interested in lettering and New York’s visual culture.

 

Materials Required
Drafting tools, brushes, paint and a workbook zine will be provided.
Please just bring yourself and pack a lunch with you on both days so we can keep painting as much as possible.

Day 1: Saturday Feb 28, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Day 2: Sunday Mar 1, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

 

Scholarship
We are offering 2 full scholarship seats for this workshop. We’d like to reserve these spots for those passionate about typography and signage who might not be able to attend due to financial constraints. We would also like to offer the spots to those who grew up in or live in our studio’s neighborhood, East New York/Brownsville. Please fill out this Google Form to let us know why you’d like to be considered for the scholarship.The deadline for entries is January 23 at 11:59PM. Applicants will be notified 20 days before the start of the workshop.

Policies 

  • Minimum Enrollment Policy: This workshop has a minimum enrollment. If this minimum is not met 4 weeks before the workshop start date, the workshop will be canceled, and all payments will be fully refunded to students, subject to no fee.
  • Waitlist: If the workshop is sold out, we do not offer a waitlist. Tickets will be released for sale if anyone cancels their participation. If the workshop is sold out, you can opt to get an email notification when new tickets are back in stock directly from this page.
  • Refund Policy: Full refund up to 2 weeks in advance of first class start date, subject to $25 administrative and processing fee. Email store@nysignmuseum.org to request a refund.

FAQs

Shipping Policy

We ship domestically to the United States only. Orders ship from Brooklyn, NY and are typically processed within 1-5 business days. Once shipped, orders typically arrive in 3-5 business days by UPS. 

Tracking information will be emailed to the address you entered at checkout once your order ships. Tracking for domestic shipments may take up to 48 hours to show up online. 

Packages are shipped by the shipping method selected at checkout. 

Carrier shipping delays can occur due to factors outside of our control. Please contact the shipping carrier if your package encounters delays. We are not responsible for shipping delays. 

We do not ship internationally or to US Territories. 


We offer UPS Ground shipping, which takes 2-5 business days once shipped. 

  • Orders $100+ - Shipping is Free
  • Orders under $100 - Shipping is $10
Order Processing

Once orders are placed, you cannot edit or cancel the order. We cannot change the shipping address, or add or remove items. Orders ship within 1-5 business days of placing an order.

Return Policy

We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase. If for any reason you're not, we accept returns under the following conditions:

Return Window

You may return eligible items within 30 days of the delivery date.

Purchases made between Nov 20 and Dec 31 2025 may be returned through January 31 2026.

Eligibility

  • Items must be unused, unwashed, and in their original packaging.
  • Certain items, such as final sale products and personalized goods, are not eligible for return. Please check the product description for any exceptions.

How to Initiate a Return

To initiate a return, please contact our customer service team at store@nysignmuseum.org with your order number and reason for return.

We will reply with a prepaid return label. $8 will be deducted from your refund to cover the return shipping. 

Refunds

Once we receive and inspect your return, we will notify you of the status. Approved returns will be refunded to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. Original shipping charges are non-refundable.

How to Request an Exchange

To initiate an exchange, please contact our customer service team at store@nysignmuseum.org with your order number and the item(s) you wish to exchange. We will confirm availability and provide return instructions. Exchanges are typically processed within 5 business days after we receive the returned item.

Once we receive and inspect the returned item, we will process the exchange and ship the replacement. You will receive a confirmation and tracking number once the exchange has been sent.
