Join us in August for an intensive, two-day, weekend workshop on Commercial Sign Painting. This Workshop will be led by renowned, Copenhagen-based sign painter, Veronika Jørgensen of Veronika Skilte (@veronika_skilte) at New York Sign Museum!
Our focus will be on traditional sign painting in the real world. Learn how to work with professional-grade materials according to the techniques used in commercial sign painting. This is a special opportunity to learn and practice the process to make a hand-painted sign, from pattern to finished sign. If you’ve dabbled in painting letters before, and are curious about the commercial trade of sign painting, then this workshop is for you! We will be working in enamel paints provided by RONAN Paints.
Learning Outcomes
After spending two days with renowned sign painter Veronika Jørgensen, you’ll be fully familiarized with:

All About Brushes: When to use which types of brush, different brushes for varied lettering styles, how to palette your brush, and caring for your brushes

Material Knowledge: All about sign painter’s enamel paint and how to work with this medium on surfaces used in professional sign jobs

Pounce Patterns: Patterns are indispensable for translating layout sketches to scale for consistency on commercial sign jobs

Design for Signs: A successful layout following the fundamentals of sign layou, and enhancing designs with effects and embellishments—making memorable signs

Final Product: Apply what you’ve learned to create a 10 in x 14 in aluminum prefinished sign with the materials and process used in commercial sign painting (sign to be picked up at a later date, to allow for drying time)
Audience
This workshop will be held in person at the New York Sign Museum, which is housed in the working design studio and workshop of Noble Signs. It is intended for those with previous painting experience, who’ve picked up a brush before, and worked on brush strokes and curves—such as when painting letters. Prepare to be challenged to work with the materials and techniques of the commercial sign painting trade.
Materials Required
All necessary materials like paint and other tools will be supplied. Please just pack a lunch with you on both days so we can keep up with painting as much as possible.

Day 2: Sunday, August 2 from 10AM – 4PM
Scholarship
We are offering one full scholarship seat for this workshop. We’d like to reserve these spots for those passionate about typography and signage who might not be able to attend due to financial constraints. We would also prefer to offer the spots to those who grew up in or live in our studio’s neighborhood, East New York/Brownsville. Minimum Enrollment Policy: This workshop has a minimum enrollment. If this minimum is not met 2 weeks before the workshop start date, the workshop will be canceled, and all payments will be fully refunded to students, subject to no fee.

Waitlist: If the workshop is sold out, we do not offer a waitlist. Tickets will be released for sale if anyone cancels their participation. If the workshop is sold out, you can opt to get an email notification when new tickets are back in stock directly from the registration page.

Refund Policy: Full refund up to 2 weeks in advance of first class start date, subject to $25 administrative and processing fee. Email store@nysignmuseum.org to request a refund.

Rescheduling Policy: NYSM reserves the right to postpone or reschedule workshops to an alternate date. Should a change occur, participants will automatically have their tickets transferred to the new date. For postponed or rescheduled workshops, participants may request a full refund by emailing store@nysignmuseum.org within 5 days of the announcement.

About the New York Sign Museum Mission
The New York Sign Museum was established in 2019 with the intention to preserve the unique history of signage and businesses in New York City. The New York Sign Museum is a 501(c)(3) public charity. The NYSM is a not-for-profit educational space for all, from sign admirers to designers looking to learn the historic art of sign painting.The NYSM team includes artists, archivists, and signage professionals. Experienced industry professionals provide sign de-installations at no cost to building or business owners, and are able to keep pieces of history from ending up in the dumpster. The foundation also offers repairs and refurbishment, tax incentives for donations, as well as a rebate program for businesses that would like to replace their old signs.The NYSM collection is currently housed in a space adjacent to Noble Signs.
